Installing a ceiling dehumidifier in Hong Kong.
Hong Kong ceiling voids are not generous. Fitting a DBA ceiling dehumidifier into 245 mm of plenum, working around sprinkler pipes, dodging conduits, and still routing drainage cleanly — every install is a millimetre game. Here is our standard sequence.

1. Site survey
Before any quote, our engineer lifts a ceiling tile and measures four things directly:
- Clear plenum height — UTC needs 245 mm, GEC V needs 280 mm+, commercial GEC more
- Structural slab position for the 28–70 kg suspension load
- Drainage destination — bathroom floor trap, FCU condensate line, or kitchen drain
- Distance to 220 V supply and whether the consumer unit has a free 16 A circuit
The classic HK trap: drawings show 300 mm clear plenum, but sprinkler pipes and existing FCU refrigerant lines have eaten 80 mm. The real clearance is 220 mm. At that point we either downsize from UTC68 to the slimmer UTC20, or move the unit to a different location.
2. Suspension and vibration
Suspend the unit on M8 or M10 threaded rod anchored into the structural slab — never into the suspended ceiling frame. Add neoprene or spring isolators between the rod and the chassis. A compressor running 18 hours a day will telegraph noise into the flat below if it is hard-mounted.
Leave 50–100 mm clearance on all sides for service access. HK ceilings commonly use clip-fit aluminium grid tiles — designate an access panel directly under the unit's filter so future maintenance does not require dismantling.
3. Drainage
Every single-phase ceiling model (UTC, GEC V, GEC68LD-HP, GEC145LD-HP) has an integrated 1.8 m pump and a check valve built into the supplied drain hose. The correct routing is for the drain line to rise from the unit to a high point at or near the 1.8 m head limit, then fall by gravity to the discharge — using the full lift, then letting gravity carry the line the rest of the way.
Three-phase models (GEC280LD, GEC400LD, GEC550LD) have no pump. They drain by gravity only — the line must slope continuously downward from the unit with no rising section.
See our drainage guide for the full method and commissioning checks.
4. Power
UTC and smaller GEC V units run on 220 V single-phase 50 Hz from a dedicated 16 A circuit. GEC280 and above need 380 V three-phase, which for residential HK requires a CLP or HKE application. Fit a local isolator within sight of the unit so future maintenance can drop power without climbing back into the void.
Wire the emergency-stop and water-leak ports during install. They are five-minute jobs on day one and disruptive to add later.
5. Ducting
Most HK residential installs use a simple single-return / single-supply layout. Larger apartments and clubhouses need branched ducting. Watch the unit's external static pressure limit — UTC about 30 Pa, GEC V about 60–80 Pa. Every metre of duct, every bend, and every grille adds pressure loss. See our ducting design notes for the full calculation.
6. Humidity sensor placement
The sensor's location determines how the unit experiences the room:
- 1.5 m height, interior wall, occupied zone
- At least 1 m from any door, window, or vent
- Out of direct sunlight
- Not inside a cabinet or behind curtains
Common mistake: sensor next to the bathroom door reads shower humidity for hours and the unit never stops. Move it to the centre of the living room and the issue evaporates.
7. Commissioning
- Run dehumidify at 45% RH setpoint for 30 minutes. Confirm water at the drain destination.
- Measure airflow at every supply grille with an anemometer; compare against design CMH.
- Verify the wall sensor against a hand-held hygrometer; recalibrate if drift exceeds 3% RH.
- Cycle the emergency-stop and water-leak inputs.
- Hand over WiFi App or BMS credentials and label the isolator and ceiling access panel.
